After a grueling 1,120-mile journey across Sudan’s unforgiving terrain, a 15-truck UN convoy nearing the war-ravaged city of El Fasher came under a fierce, coordinated attack on the night of Monday, June 2nd.
Experts say 5 humanitarian personnel, Sudanese nationals contracted by UNICEF to deliver humanitarian supplies, were killed.
The number of dead personnel was released in a joint press statement from the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF on Tuesday, June 3rd. The 15 truck convoy was trying to negotiate access to El Fasher when, “Multiple trucks were burned and critical humanitarian supplies were damaged in addition to the deaths and injuries.”
“This was the first humanitarian convoy that was going to make it to El Fasher in over one year”, says Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary General. With only 80 kilometers left from their intended civilian depot, the attacks launched, striking major international condemnation and concern about the escalating destabilization of Sudan’s major cities. “These are violations under international humanitarian law”, Dujarric mentions, underscoring the severity of such an attack.
The United Nations is calling for an independent investigation into the attacks. While there is speculation that the assault may have been coordinated by RSF forces—who have established de facto control in the region—no perpetrators have yet been definitively identified.
