DR and Rwanda to Sign Surprise Peace Deal in Washington, raising concerns on United Nations influence
On June 27th, ministers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda are set to sign a peace agreement. The deal, hosted in Washington D.C., was praised by President Trump as “a Great Day for Africa and, quite frankly, a Great Day for the World!”
For decades, eastern DRC has faced deadly conflict. The new agreement targets disarmament, refugee returns, and integrating non-state actors, including the Rwandan-backed M23 militia.
In recent months, the conflict escalated. Human rights groups like Amnesty International, along with UN agencies, reported serious violations of international law.
Despite this, the UN played no direct role in brokering the deal. Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric clarified that the UN was not involved in the talks.
Still, Dujarric welcomed the outcome. He called the deal “surprising” but emphasized the UN supports any effort bringing peace and stability to the region.
As peace talks unfold, global observers remain hopeful this surprise agreement could mark a turning point in Central Africa’s long-standing crisis.
