U.S. Sanctions on UN Expert Francesca Albanese Ignite Debate Over Human Rights and Political Dissent
The Office of Foreign Assets Control has imposed personal sanctions on United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The Italian UN expert has been outspoken about Israel’s violations of international law and the ongoing Palestinian casualties.
Previously, the Israeli Administration called for Albanese’s UN credentials to be revoked. They accused her of “escalatory anti-Semitic rhetoric” for condemning Israeli actions. Consequently, the U.S. stepped in.
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the sanctions. He accused Albanese of waging a “campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel.”
In response, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric condemned the sanctions as “unacceptable.” He emphasized that “the work of rapporteurs is vital to the UN’s human rights system.”
The sanctions result in Albanese’s U.S. visa being revoked, barring her entry.
While some label her work antisemitic and accuse her of inciting revolt, others question America’s tolerance for political dissent related to Israel. Moreover, many view this move as part of the Trump Administration’s broader campaign of political repression. Albanese is among several targeted for exposing the realities of the Israeli conflict in Gaza.
