Contradictory Reports on Rafah Crossing as UN Urges Its Opening
As conflicting reports surge between Israel and Egypt on Rafah's reopening, the United Nations urges transparency, viewing the route as critical to Gaza's population

Sphinx News:
Today, Israeli authorities have announced they will be opening the Rafah Crossing, a critical route connecting the Gaza Strip and Egypt.
With the Crossing closed since May of 2024, the United Nations has repeatedly called for its reopening, contending that the crossing is critical towards sustaining any hopes of humanitarian refuge for Gaza’s decrepit population. Just in his briefing yesterday, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, emphasized the route’s vast importance, stating, “more than 16,500 Palestinian patients still need life-saving medical care outside Gaza.”
While the United Nations and Gaza’s Health Ministry have repeatedly cited the fragility of the latest ceasefire, the COMPLETE reopening of the Rafah Crossing would undoubtedly be welcomed by the international community. In his latest comments today, Dujarric noted, “what we want to see is Rafah reopen for the movement of humanitarian cargo, for the movement of people, humanitarian personnel and residents of Gaza who want to leave, they must be able to do so freely and voluntarily without any impediments.”
Despite the scant optimism, reports on the logistics of the crossing’s reopening remain vague and contested between both Egypt and the State of Israel. While Israel’s military body COGAT said exits would be “facilitated through co-ordination with Egypt, following security approval by Israel and under the supervision of the European Union mission,” reports suggest that Egypt has denied any coordination with Israeli officials on the crossing to be reopened.
Denying the open reports today, an anonymous source from Egypt’s State Information Service said there was no coordination about reopening the Rafah Crossing in the coming days for Palestinians wishing to leave Gaza. The anonymous Egyptian source added that any coordination and negotiation on reopening of Rafah would NOT be in accordance with Israel’s intent to only open the crossing from Gaza to Egypt for Palestinians to leave.
Instead, the source from Egypt ascertained that any negotiation on the crossing’s reopening would be in accordance with Trump’s 20-point Gaza Peace Plan. The Peace Plan of course outlines that the crossing would be opened in both directions, for the full-scale distribution of humanitarian aid and personnel INTO the Strip, as well as any movement of Palestinians, humanitarian personnel, or essential machinery OUT of Gaza.
Acknowledging the ambiguity, Dujarric told reporters today, “we do not hold the keys for the gates of Gaza,” contesting that this is an issue needed to be resolved between the Egyptians and the Israelis. However, he adds, “what we would like to see is the reopening of Rafah,” insinuating that yes, the United Nations would only want to see the crossing open from both sides. This message by the UN is of course opposite to the most recent proposal mentioned by COGAT and the Israeli authorities.
