Israel set to expand “yellow line” with impunity

With reports on the ground revealing Israeli military operations expanding further into eastern and northern Gaza, the so-called “yellow line” risks becoming yet another symbolic gesture.

An agreed-upon ceasefire between Hamas representatives and Israeli authorities, signed on October 10th, was set to pave the way for a just and lasting political solution to the century-old conflict. Painted by U.S. President Donald Trump and the international community as a monumental diplomatic endeavor, conditions of the agreement would see arbiters of the peace deal oversee the indefinite halt of violence across the decrypt enclave, the open exchange of hostages and political prisoners, and the unimpeded access of UN and other humanitarian organizations’ distribution of aid.

Approached with relative optimism, the last three months of the agreement have seen anything but lasting peace. As of today, reports indicate Israeli authorities alone have killed at least 414 Palestinians and injured another 1,145 since October 10th, 2025. The promised unimpeded access of humanitarian aid for the United Nations and other relevant sanctioned organizations has equally been dismissed. While the ceasefire has allowed more humanitarian aid to enter (in relation to before the passing of Trump’s 20-point peace plan), UN Secretary-General Guterres has consistently underscored that “it is simply not enough.” According to Gaza’s Government Media Office, as of December 28th, only 42% of the total allocated trucks had entered since October 10th, indicating that 58% of the aid was blocked by Israeli officials.

In its latest contravention of the deal, Israeli authorities are reportedly expanding the so-called “yellow line” in eastern Gaza, particularly in eastern Gaza City’s Tuffah, Shujayea, and Zeitoun neighbourhoods. The so-called “yellow line” marks a temporary demarcation, indicating the first stage of withdrawal by Israeli troops within Gaza. Outlined in the agreement, Israeli troops would retreat to this so-called yellow line once hostages and prisoners were exchanged by both relevant parties, placing approximately 53 to 58% of Gaza’s military control under Israeli control. Theoretically, this initial withdraw would see the completion of phase one of the deal, eventually succeeded by the introduction of an “International Stabilization Force” and a “Gaza Board of Peace.”

Within the last 24 hours, reports on the ground reveal the Israeli army is pushing further east into the key area of Salah al-Din Street, the main highway of the Gaza Strip. The belligerence has forced Palestinians east of the “yellow line” to flee, with no sign of the escalation abating. With approximately 60–65% of the territory now under Israeli military occupation, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, urged restraint. Highlighting its severity, Dujarric describes the brazen acts with particular worry, contending, “the last thing we (the United Nations) would wanna see is that so-called yellow line become permanent or grow in size.”
