Iran Strikes U.S. Base in Qatar After Trump Targets Nuclear Sites

Explosions were reported near Doha after Iran launched missiles at the U.S. Al-Udeid base in Qatar. The attack came in direct retaliation for U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22nd.

Earlier that day, President Donald J. Trump confirmed strikes on sites in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. The joint decision between the U.S. and Israel was described as a necessary step to preserve regional peace. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu praised the move, declaring Trump acted to stop “the most dangerous regime” from acquiring “the world’s most dangerous weapons.”

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader stated, “It must be punished and it is being punished,” just before six Iranian missiles struck near Doha. No casualties were reported, but the United Nations expressed concern over the risk of wider regional escalation.

Additionally, the Iranian parliament is reportedly moving to close the Strait of Hormuz. Seeing as how 20% of global oil trade passes through the strait, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized the Secretary-General’s concern at this possibility. “Freedom of navigation must continue,” he says, reiterating the waterway’s immense value for the maintenance of political and economic stability.
