India Refuses to Restore Indus Treaty, Pakistan Warns of War
On June 22nd, Indian Home Minister Amit Shah told The Times of India that “India will never restore the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan.” The 1960 treaty ensures water access for nearly 80% of Pakistan’s farms. Its suspension is widely seen as a violation of international law.
This follows an April attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan-backed militants. Islamabad denies involvement. A brief military standoff and U.S.-led ceasefire followed.
In response, Pakistan warned that full revocation of the treaty could be seen as a declaration of war. After Shah’s statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said it showed “brazen disregard” for international law and “the sanctity of international agreements.”
Meanwhile, the United Nations urged restraint. UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said, “It is critical that natural resources be shared based on mutually accepted treaties.”
As tensions grow, international pressure is mounting. Many countries are calling for long-term diplomatic negotiations to avoid further escalation between the two nuclear-armed states.
