Speaking at the General Assembly today, David Lammy, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom, announced that the UK will take the bold yet crucial step of officially recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state.
Notably, the UK becomes the third of the P5 states to declare such recognition. Lammy emphasized this as an essential measure to guarantee the self-determination of the Palestinian people and move toward a comprehensive two-state solution.
As the crisis deepens, Lammy highlights worsening conditions on the ground. Famine continues to spread, and the death toll has now exceeded 60,000.
In response, Lammy confirmed that the UK government has taken concrete steps to distance itself from the Israeli government.
Specifically, he stated, “The UK has already taken steps to sanction violent settlers on the ground,” adding, “We suspended arms exports that could be used in Gaza,” and, “We suspended trade negotiations with the Israeli Government and sanctioned far-right Israeli Ministers for incitement.”
The ministers in question are Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir.
