WFP Warns of Escalating Starvation in Gaza as Access Remains Blocked
As the humanitarian situation worsens in the occupied Gaza Strip, the World Food Program warns the worst is yet to come. The Gaza Health Ministry has confirmed over 60,000 Palestinian deaths.
In response, Ross Smith, WFP Director of Emergencies, and Jean Martin Bauer, WFP Director of Food Security and Nutrition Assessments, raised urgent concerns. With their deliverance of the latest ICP (*International Comparison Program) report, it was found that entire communities are now facing starvation. Food systems are destroyed. Supply routes are blocked. Humanitarian access remains dangerously limited.
According to Smith, “Over 33% of Gaza goes at least a whole day without food.” Meanwhile, aid convoys struggle to reach civilians. Approvals are rarely granted due to repeated denials by the Israeli administration.
Even when access is approved, the situation remains chaotic. “Crowds are swarming convoys,” said Martin, adding that overcrowding has become a serious challenge.
To respond effectively, Smith and Martin stress the need for immediate action. They say a comprehensive ceasefire is essential. Open borders and crossings are equally crucial.
The urgency is mounting. Over 20,000 children have already been admitted for malnutrition. The WFP warns it needs “faster clearances and faster approvals” to deliver life-saving aid before conditions deteriorate further.
