The latest military escalation from the Israeli administration has seen five Al Jazeera journalists killed.
The attacks and aftermath have spread widely across social media. They have received widespread condemnation for not only the continued assault on journalism but also the indiscriminate targeting of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
Reported to have taken place late on Sunday, August 10th, the airstrike struck a tent located outside the main gate of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital.
The journalist casualties, pronounced dead soon after the strike, are: Anas al-Sharif, Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, camera operators Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal, freelance cameraman Momen Aliwa, and freelance journalist Mohammed al-Khalidi.
While global protests surge to denounce this blatant disregard for international and humanitarian principles, the United Nations has been equally vocal in its criticism.
Spokesperson for the Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, released a statement on Monday, August 11th. He said, “These latest killings highlight the extreme risks journalists continue to face when covering this ongoing conflict. The Secretary General calls for an independent and impartial investigation into these killings.”
The death toll for journalists in Gaza since October of 2023 has now reached 242 people.
