European leaders met on August 18 to tackle the escalating Russia-Ukraine crisis. At the Oval Office, U.S. President Donald Trump called NATO membership for Ukraine “unrealistic,” while discussions focused on securing the nation’s future in other ways.

Following Trump’s meeting with Russian President, Vladimir Putin in Alaska, this latest meeting sought to build on the formers triumphs. With a ceasefire and long term security guarantees for both parties being discussed, the U.S led summit hosted the, “Biggest people in Europe” to find a solution. Trump adds, they (Europe’s leaders), want to give protection. They feel very strongly about it, and we’ll help them out with that.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists Ukraine needs all the security and defense support it can get. With NATO membership off the table, Trump said, “They are a first line of defense because they’re there, but we’ll help them out,” signaling that European forces will lead Ukraine’s defense while the U.S. provides assistance where possible.

While the United Nations, “welcomes the diplomatic engagements spearheaded by the United States”, they urge “those parties directly involved in those conflicts to speak to each other directly.”

Ahead of possibilities that a comprehensive peace agreement between both parties may involve a potential ‘land swap deal’, Spokesperson for the Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, refrained from any condemnation. While land swap within the context of the ongoing conflict has violated international law, the Spokesperson, “will not insert the UN into ongoing discussions which are very delicate.”
