UN says apprehension of Flotilla activists may constitute a violation of international law

With over 41 boats in the Gaza Flotilla raided by Israeli authorities, the UN warns that Israel’s actions could be classified as breach of international law.

As organizers and political activists of the Gaza Aid Flotilla sail into the Mediterranean, attempting to break Israel’s illegal siege on the Gaza Strip, the international community denounces Tel Aviv’s actions as a contravention of international law.

According to detailed reports surrounding the incident, more than 50 vessels sailed from the Turkish port city of Marmaris last week in what organisers described as the final stage of a journey aimed at challenging Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Israeli forces began storming the boats in international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Monday, organisers said, and abducted activists.

With Israeli authorities reportedly detaining 41 of the Flotilla’s boats in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, while 10 vessels continue to sail towards Gaza, Tel Aviv defended its operation, with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office calling it “a control of terrorism.” Israeli authorities referred to the interception of the Gaza Aid Flotilla as a means of self-defense, halting a purportedly large incursion of foreign adversaries into its sovereign borders.

As of July 2024, the International Court of Justice, coupled with repeated UN Security Council resolutions, has rejected Israel’s prolonged occupation of Gaza as illegal under international law, urging experts and member states to reject the Israeli government’s professions.

In a statement released by the Foreign Ministers of Pakistan, Türkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Jordan, Libya, Maldives, and Spain on May 18th, 2026, the countries rejected Israel’s conduct as an “assault against the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful civilian humanitarian initiative aimed at drawing international attention to the catastrophic humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people.”

The statement was particularly vehement in its rhetoric against Israel’s incitement of faulty international precedents, adding, “the Ministers further stress that repeated attacks against peaceful humanitarian initiatives reflect the continued disregard for international law and freedom of navigation,” calling on “the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian missions, and take concrete steps to end impunity and ensure accountability for these violations.”

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, elucidated the United Nations’ position, telling reporters today, “We are very concerned about the safety of those on board. They need to be protected and kept safe. International law on the high seas needs to be respected.”

On Israel’s behavior infringing upon international norms and legal principles, Dujarric told Sphinx News TV, “I don’t think we have all the details of how this was done, but it doesn’t look like this was done in full respect of international law.”
